The DAy After Tomorrow, Daddy Might Come for Me

“Officer, I don't find it, this loss blinds my eyes. Beyond the forest and the day after tomorrow, will there still be dreams, will there still be treasure?”

The DAy After Tomorrow, Daddy Might Come for Me installation attemts to set the dreams under guard free. It is a play on disciplinary practices, sometimes re-enacting the methods of law enforcement in a reframed manner, sometimes trying to introduce a new practice to regain the ability to dream.

The DAy after tomorrow

He will come for me,

maybe he won't touch it,

maybe he'll go after Mom instead,

Mom hates me,

but the day after tomorrow,

Daddy will come for me, maybe.

Altató ráz fel, hogy holnapután végre álomra ébredjünk. Az anyagban megjelenő szöveg, a K1 - A prostituáltak (dokumentumfilm, 1989., rendezte: Dobray György) című film részleteire reagál.

The DAy after tomorrow

A lubally shakes us up so that we finally wake up to sleep the day after tomorrow. The text appearing in the material responds to details from the film K1 - The Prostitutes (feature-documentary, 1989, dir.:György Dobray).

Szekus füzér

Vigyázzák a rémálmokat. Te is készíthetsz az ágyad fölé, hogy ne maradj őrizetlenül. Készíthetsz a biztosúrakból koronát is, hogy ráhúzd őket az óvatlan fejedre, de le is veheted, ha szabadulnál.

Cop garland

They guard the nightmares. You can also make one above your bed so that you are not left unguarded. You can also make a crown out of the commissioners to put on your unwary head, but you can also take it off if you are released.

Vendékmunkásnők

A tükrökön vendégmunkásnőkkel is találkozunk, akik önmaguk felújításán dolgoznak.

Woman workers

We also meet guest workers in the mirrors, who are working on their own renovation.

The DAy After Tomorrow, Daddy Might Come for Me was created for exhibition The Day After Tomorrow, Everything Will Change

Curator: Kata Oltai

The exhibition is organised in collaboration between OFF-Biennale, Sincerely Yours Space & Agency, Semmelweis Medical History Museum.

“The exhibition, staged across multiple locations, explores how emerging and mid-career Hungarian women artists relate to the promise of the day after tomorrow inherited from previous generations. In the constantly reshaping battlefields, how do women respond, negotiate, and attempt to expand the narrow paths offered by patriarchy? How do they navigate private and public spaces, and the various systems of oppression, all while holding onto the hope of a better future? Do individual bargains lead to a collective solution, or have we lost this dimension? Tomorrow is still tangible, but will the day after tomorrow come?

The idea of women being constructed and confined to the private space—home and household—is deeply ingrained in the social and cultural fabric. This place promises security, but it is also interwoven with gestures of power: sometimes it speaks the language of force and power, sometimes that of flattering or romantic myths. In the public space, predominantly reserved for men, women’s status remains unclear, making them outsiders or intruders in social discourse and in institutionalized roles. While women can navigate through bargains and compromises, these strategies may bring partial individual security or autonomy but ultimately leave the fundamental part of the system untouched.

The exhibit is divided and installed across two locations: a private home, rented for the exhibition, and a former pharmacy, now part of a museum. The two spaces hold significant meaning as this area of Budapest’s 8th district is connected to the social trauma of prostitution. While society has removed this taboo from the streets, it has never tried to discuss it in a broader context.”

The DAy after tomorrow performance and walk

Performance and walk to unleash controlled dreams. We take the cop garlands we made during the exhibition out into the fresh air. We dance with them, we mess around with them. We take over the place, we secure the space. We make noise, we quiet down, we work on awakening our dreams outdoors and indoors.

The event is the performative opening of the work featured in the exhibition The Day After Tomorrow, Everyting Will Change. The starting point of the work is a critical reading of the film K1-Prostitutes. The work was born out of the intention to reframe and rewrite the legacy of the film.
